You've tried decluttering. It came back.

The dishes, the three old iPads, the coffee table books from 1992. They're not there because you're lazy or disorganized. Advertising and comparison explain the top layer of it, and then you run out of easy answers.

The figure people repeat is that we never use about 80% of what we keep. Take it or leave it — what it points at is real, and it isn't a shortage of shelving. Most of what stays in the cupboards is doing a job: holding off stress, insecurity, an old anxiety, sometimes something heavier than that.

What If I Don't Have Enough? is a short book about that job — what your things are doing for you, and what has to change before letting them go is possible.

Inside, you'll work out:

  • Why the same things pile up in the same three places
  • Which beliefs and stress triggers are doing the piling
  • How to sit with the regret and grief attached to objects you can't throw away
  • Your clutter archetype, and how what your parents kept shaped what you keep
  • Routines that are still running in six weeks
  • What to do about the kitchen, the calendar, and the family's stuff — including how to say no without starting a fight

You'll also find out what your rooms and your calendar say about you, and get a fair amount of your own time back on the way through.

The shame about the state of the house tends to go with it. So does some of the low-grade anxiety, and some of the fog — patchy focus and memory are clutter symptoms more often than people expect. Unless you're already a minimalist, you'll recognize yourself somewhere in this book.
